Dr. Barry Porter, a lecturer in MetaLab, presented our recent research on emergent, self-assembling and self-learning software systems at the USENIX OSDI conference last week – a major gathering of over 500 leading academics and systems researchers from some of the largest technology companies in the world. This work presents the first example of rapidly self-assembling computer software which also adapts to its deployment environment by automatically identifying alternative ways of assembling itself and learning about how they work. The paper was well received and generated a lot of discussion at the conference, along with some articles in technology media including Computer Weekly.
